Iowa Teen Auto Insurance

Like many other states, Iowa has adopted a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system. This is intended to reduce the number of accidents caused inexperienced teenage drivers. The system is designed to gradually introduce inexperienced drivers to more and more driving privileges as they gain behind-the-wheel experience culminating in an official Iowa driver license.

Iowa Graduated Driver License Requirements
The GDL is intended for aspiring drivers 14 to 16 years old.

To obtain an instruction permit:

  • Be at least 14 year old
  • Pass vision/knowledge test
  • Provide proof of identity and Social Security card
  • Provide written consent from parent/legal guardian

Upon receiving an instruction permit, the driver must:
  • Hold it for at least six months
  • Complete 20 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel practice, including two hours nighttime driving
  • Complete state-approved driver education course

To obtain an intermediate license:
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Provide written consent from parent/legal guardian
  • Meet all requirements for an instruction permit

To obtain a full license:
  • Be at least 17 years old
  • Provide written consent from parent/legal guardian
  • Meet all requirements for an intermediate license

Iowa Teen Driver Restrictions
  • Anyone holding an Iowa intermediate driver’s license may not drive unsupervised between 12:30 am and 5 am.
  • A teen can only drive unaccompanied if they are going to and from work, a school sanctioned event, a religious event, or in case of emergency. Waiver must be obtained.
  • Intermediate driver must be supervised by a parent/legal guardian, immediate family member at least 21, driver educator, or driver over 25 with parent/guardian’s signature.
  • May only carry as many passenger as number of seatbelts
  • Must remain accident and violation free preceding application for full license.

Anyone found in violation of these laws:
  • Will have to participate in driver improvement interview with Iowa Dept. of Transportation
  • May have restrictions imposed or face suspension of driving privileges.
