Mississippi Teen Auto Insurance

Like many other states, Mississippi has adopted a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system. This is intended to reduce the number of accidents caused inexperienced teenage drivers. The system is designed to gradually introduce inexperienced drivers to more and more driving privileges as they gain behind-the-wheel experience culminating in an official Mississippi driver license.

Mississippi Graduated Driver License Requirements
The GDL is intended for aspiring drivers 15 to 16 years old.

To obtain a Learner’s license:

  • Must be at least 15 years old
  • Pass a written and vision exam
  • Social Security card
  • Proof of identity, age, and residence
  • Proof of enrollment in or graduation from school
  • Application signed by parent or legal guardian
  • Pay $4 fee

To obtain an Intermediate license:
  • Must be 15 ? years old
  • Pass a written and vision exam
  • Must hold a Learner’s license for at least 6 months
  • Same documentation as for a Learner’s license
  • Pay $6 fee

To obtain an unrestricted license:
  • Must be 16 years old
  • Must hold an Intermediate license for at least 6 months
  • Must have clean record
  • Must provide same documentation as required above
  • Must provide proof of enrollment in or graduation from school
  • Teens 17 years old must have held a permit but Intermediate license is not required

Mississippi Teen Driver Restrictions
  • Intermediate license holders may not drive unsupervised from 10 pm to 6 am unless accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years or older.
  • The supervising driver must remain in the front passenger seat at all times.
