Nebraska Teen Auto Insurance

Like many other states, Nebraska has adopted a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system. This is intended to reduce the number of accidents caused inexperienced teenage drivers. The system is designed to gradually introduce inexperienced drivers to more and more driving privileges as they gain behind-the-wheel experience culminating in an official Nebraska driver license.

Nebraska Graduated Driver License Requirements
The GDL is intended for aspiring drivers as young as 14 years old.

If a teen is 14 years old and lives over a mile-and-a-half from school, they can get an LPE permit or learner’s permit and a limited license or “school permit.” This allows them to drive with a licensed parent or legal guardian, to and from school or school-related event.

To obtain a Learner’s License:

  • Must be 15 years old
  • Hold license for 6 months
  • Complete at least 50 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel training, including 10 hours nighttime driving

To obtain an intermediate or Restricted License:
  • Meet requirements for learner’s license
  • Must be 16 years old
  • Must hold license until 18th birthday
  • Pass vision, written, and driving tests
  • Maintain clean driving record (written and driving tests are waived if driver does not accumulate more than 3 points)
  • Provide two documents for proof of residency
  • Provide proof of age and identity
  • Pay fee: $7.50 to $26.50

Upon meeting all the above requirements, the teen can move on to an unrestricted license.

Nebraska Teen Driver Restrictions
  • Permit holder must accompanied by a licensed adult at all times, no exceptions.
  • Intermediate license holder cannot drive between 12 am and 6 am unless accompanied by licensed adult.
  • During first six months of license period, driver cannot carry more than one passenger under 19 years old unless accompanied by a licensed adult.
  • Penalties for violating these laws could result in license suspension, fines, permit or restriction period extension.
  • In addition, accumulating points can delay a driver from obtaining a full license.
