Oklahoma Teen Auto Insurance

Like many other states, Oklahoma has adopted a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system. This is intended to reduce the number of accidents caused inexperienced teenage drivers. The system is designed to gradually introduce inexperienced drivers to more and more driving privileges as they gain behind-the-wheel experience culminating in an official Oklahoma driver license.

Oklahoma Graduated Driver License Requirements
The GDL is intended for aspiring drivers at least 15 years old.

Teen drivers at least 15 years old may enter a practice driving section of the Oklahoma GDL where they can drive with a state-approved driving instructor until the teen reaches 15 ? years old.

To obtain a learner’s permit, the teen must be at least 15 ? years old and enrolled in or have successfully completed a state-approved driver education course.

At 16, a teen driver may get a learner’s permit without a driver education course. They must also meet the following requirements:

  • Pass vision and written tests
  • Provide proof of residency
  • Proof of identification and age

Intermediate License can be obtained by meeting the following requirements:
  • Must hold learner’s permit for at least 6 months
  • Must have at least 40 hours of behind-the-wheel experience, of which at least 10 hours must be at night
  • Must pass written test
  • Must have clean driving record

The intermediate license must be held for 6 months before the teen can get an unrestricted license; 12 months if the driver hasn’t taken a driver education course.

Oklahoma Teen Driver Restrictions
  • Learner’s permit holder must be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old at all times.
  • Intermediate license holders may not operate a vehicle between 11 pm and 5 am except when accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old; going to from school-related events; traveling to and from work.
  • Violation of these conditions means licensing could be delayed or driving privileges could be revoked.
