Stockton is historically a center for agricultural production it is still a major part of the economy today though the city has expressed a commitment to alternative fuels and renewable energy. Other successful sectors are telecommunications and manufacturing. The port of Stockton is one of the largest receivers of wind turbines in the world and the city’s central location, intra- and interstate freeways and high capacity national railroad system enable efficient distribution from the city.
Stockton’s economy was hit hard by the sub-prime lending market collapse in 2007. One of every thirty homes were posted for foreclosure and house prices declined by nearly 50% while unemployment skyrocketed to over 13%. By 2010, Stockton was ranked one of the three worst places to live in the United States.
