Stockton, California Auto Insurance - Agents

Located in the northern part of the state of California, Stockton sits among farmlands in the California Delta. The city is connected to the San Francisco Bay on the west making it one of two inland sea ports in the state.

Stockton has a rich history and culture. Every year travelers make their way to the city for its historical homes, unique art exhibitions and museums such as the popular Haggin Museum. Stockton is also home to California’s first university, University of the Pacific.

In 2005, Stockton was declared as the most dangerous city in the United States. Studies have declared the city the seventh lowest in the country with regard to educational achievement and the least literate of all U.S. cities with a population greater than 250,000. At over 24%, the city was also tied for the most obese metro area in the country.

By 2009 Stockton fell back to the fifth most dangerous city in the country following efforts to reduce crime rates by revitalizing the downtown area but is still a dangerous place. This is likely due to its reputation of attracting drug cartels going between Mexico, Seattle, and Vancouver.

Stockton is historically a center for agricultural production it is still a major part of the economy today though the city has expressed a commitment to alternative fuels and renewable energy. Other successful sectors are telecommunications and manufacturing. The port of Stockton is one of the largest receivers of wind turbines in the world and the city’s central location, intra- and interstate freeways and high capacity national railroad system enable efficient distribution from the city.

Stockton’s economy was hit hard by the sub-prime lending market collapse in 2007. One of every thirty homes were posted for foreclosure and house prices declined by nearly 50% while unemployment skyrocketed to over 13%. By 2010, Stockton was ranked one of the three worst places to live in the United States.
